On Friday, September 13th, Moss Art presented its first-ever Karaoke in the Cube. The night's theme was Broadway musicals, which perfectly complemented the event following A Night with Renée Elise Goldsberry. Both events were a resounding success, marking a spectacular season opener that we can all be proud of.
"We wanted to find another way to elevate the first performance of this season and really celebrate, so we thought something that would be more fun and interactive that people could enjoy that's different than what we've done in the past.," said Katie Gehrt, director of Marketing and communication here at the Moss Art center. "... It just seemed like a natural fit to try, like, Broadway karaoke to celebrate."
Season Opener Context
The Karaoke event concluded the highly anticipated season opener at the Moss Art Center, featuring Goldsberry. Tickets for the event sold out months in advance, generating significant excitement and buzz within the community, culminating in a night filled with enthusiastic performances and great music. Running from 9:30 to 11:00 pm, Karaoke in the Cube provided a full evening of musical performances
Atmosphere and Participation
The energy in the room was electric, reminiscent of a high school theater. Participants of all ages sang hit Broadway songs, creating a positive and uplifting atmosphere. This was not just the performers' doing but also the result of the audience's enthusiastic support, which filled the room with applause, laughter, and cheer. The event hosted around 100 people, making it a joyous celebration of music and performance. Around 30 people signed up to perform, and their courage and talent were met with a wave of appreciation, each earning a Moss Art T-shirt as a token of our gratitude for their contribution. The feeling the room presented was like a jazz club; there was a cash bar for people to purchase various snacks and drinks. The low purple lighting was an amazing touch too. There were various high tables for people to enjoy their refreshments and low table areas closer to the stage for the furniture set up.
Planning for the event
Gehrt explained the process behind planning the karaoke event. She stated that the idea came from a brainstorming session with the team, during which someone suggested a karaoke night for the season opener. Everyone was on board and stepped into their roles accordingly. Their dedication and hard work made this event a success.
Programming responsible for the event's logistics, including but not limited to reaching out and booking the artist and organizing the event's details.
The marketing team promoted the event by creating and distributing flyers on campus and social media. Their proactive approach also led them to find a suitable DJ for the event.
The DJ's role was crucial to maintaining a lively and energetic audience. He also acted as the emcee and introduced each performer before they came on stage.
The production committee was essential to mounting the event's atmosphere. They were in charge of finding a space for the event and creating the club atmosphere. They created a club-like jazz bar setting by handling lights, seating arrangements, and more to create an amazing ambiance.
"We have a number of different teams here within the Moss Art Center," says Gehrt. "So we're all working together on this... it's like a group project."
